Breathing to calm anxiety fast
General wellness information. Not medical advice, and not a substitute for professional care.
Nervio is a breathing timer for general wellness. It is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and not for emergencies. If you are in crisis, call your local emergency number or a crisis line. Stop if you feel dizzy or light-headed; if you have a heart, lung or other medical condition or are pregnant, check with a doctor first. Terms and disclaimer
Fast, here, means the exercise itself is short. It does not mean anxiety disappears on a schedule. The pattern is a longer exhale than inhale, with no breath holds: in for 4 seconds, out for 6. A few minutes is the whole thing.
Calm mode in Nervio starts at that count. You can choose 30 seconds, 1 minute, or 2 minutes. Eyes open is fine. Matching the guide loosely is fine.
The exercise
Stay where you are if you are safe. You do not need a quiet room, a special posture, or your eyes closed.
- Inhale for about 4 seconds. A normal breath is enough.
- Exhale for about 6 seconds. Do not rush it, and do not push until you are straining to be empty.
- Keep going for the time you chose. If your mind wanders, that is normal. Come back to the longer out-breath when you notice.
- Stop when the time ends, even if you still feel anxious. You can repeat it later.
If 4 and 6 feel like too much, you are allowed to breathe smaller than the count. The point is the longer out-breath, not a perfect number.
Calm, Reset, and the others
Calm is the everyday timed version. Reset is for a panic attack: shorter breaths, about 3 in and 5 out, no timer, and you stop when you want. Box breathing adds equal holds if you want something to count. 4-7-8 is slower and is meant for bed, not for the middle of a meeting.
After a Calm session you can mark Better, Same, or Worse. Worse shortens the next session a little. Better lengthens it. The exhale stays longer than the inhale.
When anxiety is more than a rough few minutes
This is not therapy, and it is not a plan for panic disorder, trauma, or anxiety that is getting in the way of your life. If that is where you are, a qualified professional can help. If you are in crisis, use the lines at the bottom of this page. In Canada, call or text 988.
Breathing for focus is a different job: a short even pattern before you start a task, not a way to bring anxiety down.
